D’banj left Globacom for MTN

D’banj has indeed parted ways with GLO and signed a new deal with rival, MTN.
We also know that Dbanj and MTN are partnering with BOI (Bank Of Industry) to pioneer a new service called ‘The Cream Platform’.
A rep from D’banj’s company, DKM tells us that, ‘It’s more of a partnership between MTN and DKM to launch a platform of visible hope for the creative industry where creative content will be found, housed, financed, nurtured, published, marketed, distributed and sold with track-able monitoring by content owners without leaving their comfort zones. With the support of the Bank of industry who is providing funding for DKM, this initiative and the launching of a new publishing company’
D’banj, a charming entertainer and businessman, has in recent times worn more suits than denim; flying around the world to pitches and presentations, hoping to build solutions for some of the industry’s problems.
In April at NECLive, he announced a nationwide distribution platform in partnership with SLOT and Gabosky.
Sources say his new deal with MTN is a further step in exploring such solutions – helping distributing entertainment products better, monetizing and monitoring music content and catalogues, and experimenting with markets within the African Union.
It is not clear how much cash was put on the table.

Beenie Man ‘falls victim to Zika virus’

  • Under the weather: dancehall reggae artist Beenie Man, shown in a picture he shared on Instagram, has fallen ill with the Zika virus (Photograph supplied)

Dancehall reggae artist Beenie Man, one of the headline acts at the Cup Match Summer Splash, has reportedly fallen ill with the Zika virus.
The diagnosis was reported in Rolling Stone, which added that the Jamaican artist had called off a concert set for Saturday after being denied a Canadian visa.
There were local reports that Beenie Man had appeared unwell at his show in Bermuda on Wednesday night.
The spread of the mosquito-borne virus, which can cause mild fever and a rash, has been an international concern because it can damage babies in the womb, causing microcephaly.
It comes as the Bermuda Government ramped up efforts to keep the virus out of the island, including the deployment of mosquito traps by the Department of Health’s vector control team.
The health ministry said: “The Ministry of Health and Seniors is aware that the performer, Beenie Man, visited Bermuda to perform at a concert on July 27.
“He recently reported via social media that he is ill with zika virus, which he contracted before visiting the island. The Minister of Health and Seniors, on behalf of Bermuda, wishes him a speedy recovery. “This unfortunate situation offers an opportunity to remind the public about how to reduce the risk of contracting zika virus.
“Zika is often a mild illness, with 80 per cent of those infected having no symptoms at all. Transmission is either through being bitten by a mosquito that has previously bitten someone carrying the virus, or through intimate sexual contact. Zika virus can cause serious health problems in some babies whose mothers contract the virus while pregnant.
“The ministry would like to remind all travellers that if they become ill, they should see a physician and outline their recent travel itinerary. If travelling from an area with any mosquito-borne illnesses like zika, dengue, or chikungunya, travellers are asked to consistently apply mosquito repellent for 2 weeks after returning to Bermuda, to reduce the chance of any onward transmission.
“In addition, precautions should be taken to prevent sexual transmission of Zika virus to one’s partner via body fluids for at least 8 weeks following possible exposure. These precautions should be taken even if one does not have symptoms of illness.
“Special efforts should also be made to protect a pregnant woman from contracting the Zika virus due to its serious impact on the unborn child. All pregnant women at risk of exposure to Zika should seek immediate advice from their physician.
“In collaboration with the Department of Customs, travellers arriving at LF Wade International Airport are given public health information in a variety of ways, including an announcement over the public address system, an advisory on an electronic monitor, a printed card that outlines what to do if a traveller feels ill, and targeted health questions by customs officers depending on the jurisdiction from which the traveller has arrived.
“Bermuda is Zika-free. Bermuda’s Vector Control team has an excellent mosquito control programme, but property owners are reminded to clear debris and to take the time to tip out standing water to reduce breeding grounds for mosquitoes.”

“Marriage is making it work and that is what is failing a lot of marriages these days because people go into it with the wrong mindset.

National Theatre in darkness for unpaid N9m debt

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EKEDC) yesterday said electricity supply to the National Arts Theatre in Lagos was disconnected because its management was owing over N9 million debt.
Mr Idemudia Godwin, general manager, Media Communications of EKEDC, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the complex was disconnected after appeals and demand notices went unheeded.
According to him, the debt is an accumulation of unpaid bills over time.
“We don’t disconnect without serving notice.
“Besides, we recently ran a newspaper advertisement informing ministries, departments and parastatal agencies (MDAs) of government that were indebted to EKEDC of our intention to disconnect them.
“We have commenced disconnection of historic debtors, including residential, commercial, industrial and government establishments within our network,’’ he said.

2 more Nigerians killed in South Africa

Barely a week after a 35-year-old Nigerian businessman, Ikejiaku Chinedu was killed in the Limpopo province in South Africa by operatives of a private security firm, tragedy has struck again as two more Nigerians have been killed in the Guateng Province, Johannesburg.
According to the President of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, Ikechukwu Anyene, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Port Harcourt in a telephone interview from Pretoria he said the two men were killed on Friday, July 29, at different areas of Johannesburg.
The first victim, Gideon Ogalaonye, an indigene of Onitsha, Anambra, was allegedly shot dead at 7 p.m. while on a visit to the residence of his daughters, while the second victim, Nnamdi Michael, an indigene of Enugu state, was allegedly stabbed to death by a Zimbabwean national at Yeoville at 8 p.m on the same day.

According to Anyene, eyewitnesses that Michael’s assailant first demanded money, which was not given and later attempted to forcefully remove his phone. He said the assailant stabbed the victim, adding that Nigerians at the scene pursued and arrested him.

Anyene said: “The Zimbabwean has been handed over to the police and we will follow the case.
“The two incidents have been reported to the Nigerian mission in South Africa and the South African police.
“The Nigerian community in South Africa are not happy with the killings.
“We urge the Federal government to persuade its South African counterpart to investigate and prosecute incidents of killings of Nigerians in that country.
“We are getting worried about these incessant killings and we want the culprits prosecuted.”

FCMB Lekki branch manager shoots himself dead over N350m debt

First City Monument Bank Plc says its official, Olisa Nwakoby, who committed suicide on Friday in front of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Lekki, Lagos State, had personal challenges and became frustrated.
The bank, however, noted that neither the management nor colleagues of the deceased were aware of the challenges, adding that it was working with Nwakoby’s family and the police to unravel the nature of the challenges.
Forty-four-year-old Nwakoby, said to be the manager of the bank’s branch in Lekki, shot himself in the head over a bad debt estimated at N350m on Friday.

The deceased was said to have given out the sum as loan to a bank customer, who allegedly failed to service the loan.
He was reportedly under pressure from the bank’s management to repay the loan and became frustrated as he could not meet the demand.
But the Acting Group Head, Communications and Brand Management of the FCMB, Lola Egboh, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone on Sunday, said the suicide had nothing to do with the bank, adding that she did not have the knowledge of any loan.
Egboh, who described Nwakoby’s death as shocking, said the bank would have come to his aid if it was aware that he had emotional challenges.
She said, “It is rather unfortunate that the incident happened. Mr. Nwakoby was a member of staff of the FCMB. We are not aware that he was facing personal challenges, which led to the incident. As a bank that caters to the well-being of its workers, we have counsellors who could have helped him. This came as a surprise to us as it was to the public. It is such a trying time for the family; we have been in touch with them. There is a lot of speculations going on at the moment, a lot of them unfounded.
“We are working closely with security operatives and his family to understand what could have led to the personal challenges. I am not aware of any loan. I can’t comment on speculations.”
Efforts to speak with the family proved abortive as of press time. But a source close to the family said, “They were too distraught to speak to the press now.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said a pistol and live cartridges were recovered from the scene, adding that Nwakoby  corpse had been deposited at the Lagos Island Hospital’s morgue.
She said, “At about 9.45am on Friday, one Olisa (Nwakoby) allegedly shot himself in the head with a pistol in front of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church on Northern Foresore Estate, Lekki.
“A team of policemen attached to the Ilasan division visited, examined and photographed the scene. The exhibit, a silver America pistol with five rounds of unexpended ammunition, was recovered to the station while the corpse was removed and deposited at a morgue for autopsy. Investigation is ongoing.
